About

My name is Emily Shao

Growing up, I watched my mother manage the complexities of being a working parent. I saw her juggle her work with early-morning school runs, often sacrificing her own passions and aspirations to ensure her family was happy. But what struck me most was how rarely people acknowledged the person behind the title of "Mom."

This platform is created to collect and honor stories that reveal the identities behind motherhood. I hope these voices inspire you to start conversations in your own community, and to bring greater awareness to the unseen dimensions of being a mother.

Unveiling Her Story: The Woman Behind the Mother

Stories documented by Emily Shao

Growing up, I watched my mother manage the complexities of being a working parent. I saw her juggle her work with early-morning school runs, often sacrificing her own passions and aspirations to ensure her family was happy. But what struck me most was how rarely people acknowledged the person behind the title of "Mom."

At family gatherings, conversations revolved around her role as a mother—questions about her children, our school progress, and what we needed next. I am not sure if anyone asked about her ambitions, her interests, or the challenges she faced outside of parenthood or the aspirations she held before embracing motherhood.

As a high school student consumed with thoughts about my own future and career, I was curious. One day I asked her about her dreams before she became a mother. Her eyes lit up as she described how she once wanted to open her own business—a dream she set aside to focus on raising us. That conversation stayed with me, sparking questions about how society views and supports mothers. Are they celebrated for their multifaceted identities, or are they often reduced to just one role?

This personal connection motivated me to embark on this research project. I wanted to uncover the stories of other mothers—their joys, their struggles, and their aspirations—and shine a light on the woman behind the mother. Through these interviews, I hope to understand how societal expectations and support systems influence a mother’s career, identity, and sense of self.

I hope these stories spark new conversations and inspire change, encouraging us as a society to support the woman behind the mother in keeping her aspirations alive.

The Stories (Read them through a new lens)

I have interviewed a lot of mothers and documented their stories, each unique yet bound by a common thread of sacrifice—a reality society often expects but rarely questions.

As you read, I encourage you to reflect on these questions:

Why is motherhood equated with sacrifice?

What societal gaps make balancing work and motherhood so challenging?

Why are mothers held to rigid expectations, and is a father’s journey judged the same way?

After reading, I hope that next time you meet a mother, you will ask about her story—not just as a mother but as the woman behind the mother.
