My Mom is Amazing at...

“My Mom is Amazing at…” is a public whiteboard reflection project designed to celebrate the often-overlooked talents, passions, and strengths of mothers. By inviting people to complete this simple sentence, the project helps uncover the vibrant identities that mothers continue to hold beyond their caregiving roles. It’s a reminder that every mother is not just a “Mom” but a person with dreams, skills, and stories of her own.

Thank You Mom!

Mothers Day Special!

What Emily Heard/Saw:

While walking around with the board, I could tell people were genuinely interested. Later in the day, some people even came up to me while I was walking or inside stores, asking what the project was about. The interviews felt really positive, and mothers and non-mothers alike opened up. One word that kept coming up to describe moms was “strength,” which really stuck with me. Even people who didn’t want to be filmed ended up staying to talk about their experiences and thoughts on my project. Maybe because this was conducted on Mother’s Day, but people really wanted to talk. We met everyone from nurses to professors, and what I appreciated most was how non-mothers were able to describe their own moms with love and as someone with a life and story of her own.

How Can I do this?

1 / Set Up

Set up a whiteboard in a public space, such as a school hallway, park, or café. Write the prompt “My Mom is Amazing at…” in the Middle. , or any prompt you find suitable and meaningful to you.

2 / Invite

Bring colorful markers and invite passersby to share their thoughts by writing on the board. (I also took the whiteboard to different locations to reach more people!)

3 / Interact

Capture their words, phrases, and stories as they grow on the board. Optionally, take photos of creative responses and share the community's voices (with permission).
